Case Study: When a Nevada-based grocery store chain needed to replace its legacy computer systems, its management team faced the common dilemma of whether to purchase an off-the-shelf product or custom-build an application. Management’s decision to build a new system from scratch points to the latest trend in application development. Please have a look at the Case Study, Software Development Trends Back to its Roots of Custom Applications.

iSeriesNetwork.com Article Features Surround Technologies Product: Although the IT analysts all seem to say that in-house software development is going the way of the coelacanth, iSeries shops can tell you that is just a big fish story. Envision Visual LANSA Reporter

Looking for a better way for your end users to be able to view and print forms and reports from within your Visual LANSA Application? Surround Technologies has the solution, Envision Visual LANSA Reporter. Visual LANSA Reporter is a Visual LANSA reusable part that can be placed into any Visual LANSA application and used to print Windows-like reports with ease by controlling font type, style and size, as well as page and paragraph formatting.   Surround Technologies' LANSA 2005 Initiatives Back to Top
LANSA 2005

Surround Technologies has been working with LANSA 2005, including its controlled beta and early releases, since November 2004. Before the LANSA User Conference and the general availability release of the tool, we went live with a full LANSA 2005 WAM (Web Application Module) based Web site; a Pocket PC, Web, and Windows Conference Prize Registration system; and a prototype of our WAM-based Contact Management system.

Surround Technologies has established and is already rolling on a number of strategic initiatives for the LANSA 2005 product.

  • LANSA 2005 Mentoring Practice — Having significantly guided a number of LANSA development shops already, we have established a LANSA 2005 Mentoring Practice designed to get your team up and going very quickly with your LANSA 2005 projects.
  • Envision Visual LANSA Accelerator Certification — Surround Technologies has fully tested its Visual LANSA Accelerator product and all its other products developed using Visual LANSA Accelerator with LANSA 2005 and its latest updates. Everything is looking very positive and certification should be completed soon. This extensive testing will save Visual LANSA Accelerator clients many thousands of dollars in testing costs themselves.
  • Envision Product Suite Upgrade to LANSA 2005 — As soon as Visual LANSA Accelerator is fully certified with LANSA 2005, we will be releasing new versions of all our products using the LANSA 2005 environment.
  • Today’s Business Computers’ Casino Enterprise Management Upgrade — Surround Technologies will be working very closely with Today's Business Computers, a Visual LANSA Accelerator client, to upgrade and release their software using the LANSA 2005 environment.
  • Envision Visual LANSA WAM Accelerator — We have already started working on enhancements to our Visual LANSA Accelerator tool to generate Web- and Pocket PC-based versions of systems using LANSA 2005 WAM technology. The initial generated system will be based on the Contact Management WAM prototype.
  • Envision Product Suite Upgrade to WAMs — Using the Visual LANSA WAM Accelerator, Web and Pocket PC based version of many of our systems will be created.
  • Surround Technologies Automatic Replenishment System — STARS is a collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment system designed to fully optimize the supply chain by better forecasting the demand. The system uses daily sales information from stores along with hundreds of other variables to accurately forecast the quantity of product needed for order generation and fulfillment.

Press Release: For the full press release on these initiatives, please read Surround Technologies Announces LANSA 2005 Initiatives.

New Visual LANSA Accelerator Wizards Significantly Reduce Development Time Back to Top

The Surround Technologies development team once again has found new ways to add hours to your day. The new Wizard for the Envision Visual LANSA Accelerator (EVLA) tool increases developer productivity by a phenomenal 96%! What previously took 6 hours now takes just 15 minutes!

The new EVLA Wizard steps the developer through a series of screens into which information is entered about the system being created. Once the questions are answered completely, the Wizard will automatically enter in all the Framework file entries and create and compile all of the programs needed. The only thing left to do by the programmer is to add business-specific functionality and preferences to the system.

Surround Technologies offers a proof of concept project to clients interested in taking a look at what EVLA can do for their system. In our standard proof of concept project for EVLA, we allocate 4 hours of development time where 3 hours is used to create a shell system for 5 of the client’s files. For aour lates proof of concept, we usd the new Wizards. We ended up using 10 files from the client’s system and created a shell system in just 15 minutes. The last hour of the prototype project was spent on Detailer enhancements, such as rearranging and adding field visualizations to the detail screens to meet business requirements.

Based on this new technology, our proof of concept projects for the new EVLA Wizards will utilize up to 10 of the client’s files and will be limited to just 2 hours of development time. There is no other way to develop a Windows-based system faster!

Take a look at our LANSA Personnel System as another example of productivity savings. It originally was developed by our programmer in less than 8 hours, but using the new EVLA Wizards, the same functionality could be developed in just 2 hours. See the Personnel System Tour.

Besides the new Wizard, another enhancement to the EVLA product is the improved Code Generator. This component has been enhanced to create and compile the programs it generates, resulting in the automation of a very time-consuming and mundane task of copying and pasting code into the LANSA IDE.

Finally, EVLA developers now can access all the functionality of EVLA directly from within the Visual LANSA IDE. Now with just one menu click, you can open the New Wizard, the EVLA Framework Maintenance and the Code Generator.

Have a peek at the new wizards in the EVLA tour at http://www.surroundtech.com/evlatour.
